Henry and Marvin’s Colourful Adventure
By Alisha Ali
Our story begins in the magical land of Hickens. Many a human tried to take the little town, but none could ever accomplish this task. Hickens was run my animals of all shapes and sizes. The best part about living in Hickens, was that all the different species all seemed to get along. The mice could visit the cats in town without fearing the worst. Dogs and cats could live in harmony, or at least Finn and Mia could, they were the town’s only dog-cat couple.
Hickens Mayor Muggles always welcomed other species to move into town, and that’s where our tale truly begins. Henry moved to Hickens from his old town of Jasper to get away from the other elephants, who laughed at him and called him names just because he was different. It wasn’t his fault that he was born purple.
Henry was sitting on a giant boulder just outside of town at the Flamingo River, thinking about how his life could have gotten so off course when he caught the faint sound of someone crying. Being as curious as he was, he decided to investigate. Luckily, being an elephant meant he had huge ears.
Henry found a poor little green fur ball crying being a small rock on the other side of the river. He couldn’t tell what kind of animal it was, if it was an animal at all.
“What’s wrong little buddy?” he said in his quietest voice, not wanting to scare the poor thing.
The green fur ball jumped up and tried to run away. Henry noticed that the green thing wasn’t a thing, it was a mouse. A little green mouse. Instead of letting him run away, Henry picked him up with his trunk.
“Don’t go! I didn’t mean to scare you, I heard you crying and it was one of the saddest sounds. What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” Henry was truly concerned, in his experience, mice rarely travelled alone.
The mouse wiped his eyes and looked up at Henry. “I was being chased, and now I can’t find my way home.” Before the mouse could finish his sentence, he burst into tears again.
Henry smiled some. “Don’t worry little buddy, I’ll help you get home.”
The mouse looked at Henry again. “Really?”
Henry smiled. “Of course, I’d be happy to help. I’m Henry.”
“I’m Marvin” Marvin smiled.
“Nice to meet you Marvin. Before we go, do you think we could hang out here for a little while longer? I’m not ready to go home yet. I don’t have any friends around here and my apartment is big and lonely.” Henry gently put Marvin back down and then sat on the ground this time.
Marvin shook his head and climbed up on the boulder. “Not at all. I understand completely. I don’t have any friends because I’m green. The rest of the mice laugh at me and tease me. “
“That’s why I had to move! All the other elephants used to call me names and laugh at me because I’m purple, and now I’m the only elephant in town.” Henry pouted.
“Actually, I’d say you’re more of a violet than a purple. Purple tends to be a much harsher colour, while violet is creamy.”
Henry was unsure of how to respond to Marvin’s comment. He’d never met anyone, or anything quite like Marvin. Henry’s thought was interrupted by Orton the ostrich who had come running towards them.
“HELP! HELP! HELP!” Orton screamed as he ran. Unfortunatly, Orton had no control over when he stopped. It was his one flaw, other than being orange. He ran directly into the river before Henry could get his trunk out to help him stop.
Orton’s head flew down in defense and buried itself in the sand. Marvin and Henry stared at his head in amazement for several minutes before it popped back up.
“Sorry about that mates, can’t always control my head.” Orton’s australian accent was flawless. He shook off the last of the sand on his head and straightened his neck again. “As I was saying, Help! Toby’s stuck in the middle of the pond and he can’t swim!”
Marvin and Henry looked at Orton. “Who?” they said in unison.
Orton sighed. “Toby! The turtle who runs the diner in town, he was swimming in the pond when he saw Jorge the electric eel, and now he’s terified of entering the water again.” Orton’s voice was panicked.
Henry and Marvin exchanged a look. “Lets save him! Toby’s very important to the town, and he’s so nice!”
And so it was decided, Henry and Marvin would go save Toby from Jorge. Orton, being the fastest runner of the three, decided to run back to town and see if he could get anyone else to help out. All three of them set out.
Marvin was sitting on atop Henry’s head, while Henry ran. After a few minutes of running, they arrived at the pond to see Jorge circling the rock that Toby w
as nervously sitting on.
Marvin sighed sadly. “Poor Toby. Jorge’s the biggest bully of them all. He’d tease anything.”
Henry wouldn’t stand for it anymore. After years of being ridiculed for being purple, or violet as Marvin had said, Henry was ready to crack.
“Get away from there Jorge. You have no business bullying poor Toby! He has never done anything to you! You’re just a big bully...and if you don’t stop...you’ll be sorry!”
Marvin gasped, as did Toby.
Jorge laughed suddently. “And what, are you going to do about it, you big purple goof.”
Henry moved Marvin to the ground with his trunk and took one step towards the pond. “I’ll step on you and squish you to bits.”
Jorge laughed again. “I’ll electrocute you!” He began laughing even more.
A crowd began to assemble around Henry, no doubt sent by Orton from the town. Some of the crowd laughed at Henry as well, others looked worried. It was obvious, no one knew what would happen to either animal.
Henry smiled some. He’d endured electric eel shocks before, and he was certain that he could do it now. His mother had always insisted that it would come in handy one day, and she was right. Henry stepped into the water, and continued moving forward until his foot was just above Jorge.
Jorge, thinking that Henry was bluffing, jumped out of the water and electrocuted Henry’s foot. Everyone gasped and Marvin began crying again.
Henry did nothing for a few moments, and then knocked Jorge off his foot. Jorge was so shocked by this that he swam away as fast as he could without looking back. Marvin stopped crying and smiled at Henry.
“You did it!” he exclaimed with joy. “You scared him away!”
Toby smiled at Henry. “Thank you Henry!
Henry smiled. “I couldn’t have done it without my best friend Marvin.”
Marvin burst into tears. “No one’s ever called me their best friend before!”
Mayor Muggles appeared in the crowd then, and broke through the crowd. He walked over to Henry and shook his trunk.
Henry was completly dumbfounded. “H-H-Hello Mr Mayor Muggles Sir.”
Mayor Muggles simply smiled and turned to the crowd. “We all witnessed a truly inspired act today. Henry, the purple elephant rid us of one of the biggest bullies this town has ever seen, and for this, I hereby declare today, March 8th, as Henry the purple elephant day!”
The entire town cheered, however Henry could not accept that. He whispered something to Mayor Muggles, who then cleared this throat. The celebration stopped at once, and everyone stared at him again.
“Henry has requested that today be declared Henry and Marvin’s colorful adventure day instead.”
Celebration continued, and in the days that followed, other towns became aware of what Henry and Marvin had done. The elephant clan from Jasper arrived in town and appeared at Henry’s doorstep.
“Henry, we’d like to apologize for the way that we treated you. We judged you before we knew you because you were different, and that wasn’t fair at all. We’re very sorry and we hope that someday you’ll forgive us.”
Henry smiled. “Of course.”
Shortly after Henry’s elephant friends left, Marvin’s fellow mice showed up to apologize to him for the same thing. Marvin was so happy that he ,once again, burst into tears.
Henry and Marvin became life long friends and lived happily ever after together.
