Scene 1
Hanney, a twenty-eight-year-old Canadian actor, just arrived off the boat and is heading up the street to a pub. He meets a young lady, Christine Delaney, on his way to the pub where he is supposed to meet with the producer before performing at the OceanAir Club the next day. He meets her by saving her from getting splashed by a car going through a puddle. So, he talks her up, all charmingly, and brings her to the pub. (Side note: In dialogue, Christine has to mention something about him not being from around here.)
Scene 2
Hanney and Christine enter the crowded pub. Over by the entrance they see a cop and over on the right side of the room Hanney notices a group of gentlemen that appear to be planning something. They all look up as he walks in. He leads her to the bar and they each order a drink. After being there for a few minutes, Hanney and Christine are approached by a gentleman who looks to be about late thirties and is dressed very nice in a suit and a long black trench coat. He goes on his way. They are then approached by a man by the name of Charlie Danforth, who is the producer at the OceanAir Club. While in conversation, a gun goes off near them. They look around and notice that the gentleman that he had spoken with previous was dead. Charlie looks around and notices that the cop is coming their way and suggests to Hanney that he and Christine follow him. They quickly leave the pub.
EXT HARBOR: STREET.
A PANNING RIGHT along the dock of the rainy HARBOR and a SHIPPING BOAT with a CANADIAN FLAG WAIVING at the top of the mast at the OXFORD Harbor, we know this because in the PANNED SHOT a sign that says “OXFORD HARBOR” is able to be read. CAMERA CONTINUES TO PAN and a MEDIUM ZOOM is done TO SHOW HANNEY, a 28-YEAR-OLD ACTOR from CANADA (looks like MILO VENTIMIGLIA), is standing on a sidewalk by a dock. There’s a BOAT behind HIM and HE is looking around for the LUGGAGE CART. He finally SPOTS it and walks over to retrieve his luggage. He picks up his very noticeably ratty suitcase and backpack off the cart. HANNEY WALKS away from the harbor. He is headed towards town on foot. He takes an umbrella out of his
As he is CROSSING the street, he notices a young gorgeous woman, maybe about 25ish, at a corner trying to cross without getting splashed by oncoming traffic going through puddles. He picks up his pace a bit and gets in front of her with his umbrella out, which proves to be defenseless against it, as a car glides through a huge puddle.
HANNEY
(Chuckles)
Didn’t get wet did you?
CHRISTINE
(Smiles)
A little on the bottom of my skirt.
Other than that, you rescued me
from getting my night ruined. What’s your story?
HANNEY turns to face her and gets on the sidewalk.
HANNEY
(Sighs)
Well, miss, I am Hanney Humphrey. Who might you be?
THEY begin WALKING together down the street. It is lightly lit by the moon and flickering streetlamps.
CHRISTINE
(Smiling)
I’m Christine Delaney. You sound from out of town.
HANNEY
I am. I’m from Canada.
CHRISTINE
That’s a long way to come. What are ya here for?
HANNEY
I’m an actor. I applied for a position at a music hall called the OceanAir Club in town here and I received a letter about a week or so
ago that said I had gotten the job.
(Coughs)
So, naturally, I came as quickly as humanly possible by boat
and right now I am supposed
to be going to a pub to meet with
the producer of the music hall where I got the job.
(Squints his eyes)
Where are you from, Miss Delaney? If I’m not mistaken,
I hear an Irish accent in your voice.
CHRISTINE
(Nods head)
Yes, I am Irish. You’re a very astute actor.
But to be an actor, I suppose ya have to be, huh?
HANNEY
(Nods)
Yea. It helps me learn different accents and material.
(He laughs)
That sounded a bit too
So, do you want to get a drink with me?
CHRISTINE
(Surprised)
What? I just met you.
HANNEY
Yes, but I want to buy you a drink.
A pretty gal like yourself shouldn’t
have been roaming the streets this late
without accompaniment of a gentleman.
(Smiles)
Let me fill your void for tonight and you can fill my
want of having pleasing company for the evening.
ALONG the way walking, HANNEY starts to notice that British Army men are walking around very heavily.
